Been to Holladay lately? This Salt Lake suburb is in the process of transforming its downtown area into a pedestrian-friendly public space, complete with a car-free plaza and a new 40,000 square-foot mixed-use development. It’s a great place to grab lunch, explore some locally owned shops or enjoy some early spring sunshine. The area is located at 2300 S. Murray-Holladay Road and is accessible by bus routes 45, 223 and 228.
Julius Palumbo manages Taqueria 27, a Mexican restaurant that recently opened a location on the plaza. Palumbo said that during the day, the plaza is filled with cyclists and joggers. By the evening, families come out to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the traffic-free space.
“We think this area is going to blossom as the new Sugar House,” Palumbo said.
The plaza and mixed-use development is part of the city’s effort to enhance its downtown area and create a sense of community, said Holladay City Development Director Paul Allred.
“The city was concerned about the older downtown area,” he said. “Fifteen years ago, the area was pretty dilapidated.”
The city purchased land at the intersection of 2300 East and Murray-Holladay Road, tore down several chain stores on the property, buried power lines and put in place strict building standards to preserve the area’s visible appeal.
Allred said that the community plaza will be used for farmers’ markets, art shows and food tastings, while larger gatherings can be held at the newly renovated Holladay City Hall facilities. He believes the changes will help capitalize on Holladay’s unique atmosphere and create a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
“We’re creating a civic center and enhancing the heart of our community,” Allred said. “We want this to be something organic and eclectic.”
