Why a Career in Public Transit

There’s a lot of reasons to consider a career in public transit. Transit Center summarizes the benefits well in a recent report:

“American transit agencies employ approximately 430,000 people who have chosen to work in the industry for various economic, social, and environmental reasons. Transit jobs have historically been good jobs, and the field’s competitive wages and benefits have launched many Americans into the middle class. For people motivated by giving back, a career in transit is a way to serve their communities.

For workers concerned about the climate, transit provides a chance to play a role in reducing carbon emissions directly. While the industry is far from perfect, transit has provided many workers a rewarding career that has sustained them and their families.”

In other words, if you're motivated by serving your community, concerned about environmental impact, or looking for a growing and reliable career, come to talk to us on Saturday.

Keep in mind that we employ over 2,900 employees, have services across six counties, and are growing. Though Salt Lake County is the highest serviced area, we also have service units in Provo and Ogden, so you can find something that works for you.

Why a Career at UTA

Hear from a few UTA employees about their experience and what brought them to public transit.

Jimbo "I needed a career that gave me more family time, so I decided to drive buses for UTA. I am home every day of the week. This is the first time in 37 years that I see my wife and kids every night." — Jimbo, UTA Salt Lake Bus Operator

Brandon “UTA is the most stable job out there. People always need someone to get them to places. We have limited space to add more roads, which means more buses and trains. To make things even better, you get amazing pay and benefits with only a high school diploma.” — Brandon, UTA TRAX Operator

LaTanya “UTA offers people a stable, secure job. It allows you to invest in yourself and work with some amazing people. There are lots of opportunities to grow. You learn new things and the job is challenging. If you hate working in a cubicle, then become an operator. If you love fixing things, become a mechanic. If you are a social butterfly, then work in customer service. There are shifts all day long, and UTA gives you the chance to challenge yourself and grow.” — LaTanya, UTA TRAX Mechanic
