Support
Please try the following general troubleshooting tips to resolve connectivity problems. Some laptops may have different procedures for connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Please consult the Help functions on your computer or the manufacturer’s instructions. Some laptops may also feature firewalls that prevent connection. No Networks Available
If you do not see any available networks in your list of “Available Wireless Networks”, the problem may be with your laptop or wireless device. Check to make sure your wireless network card is enabled. Many laptops have a button or function (Fn) key to enable the wireless card (e.g. Fn + F2). There may also be an indicator on your laptop or on screen to indicate whether the wireless is currently functioning.
Unable to Connect
The system may be trying to connect through a dial-up connection instead of using your wireless card. Write down any existing settings before making changes.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer:
- In Control Panel, double-click "Internet Options."
- Click on the tab marked "Connections."
- Under "Dial-Up Settings," Click the option "Never dial a connection."
- Click "APPLY," then click the "OK" button.
Connected but Unable to Access the Internet
If you are connected but still unable to access the Internet, try the following steps:
I. Agree to Terms. Before attempting to use the Internet did you first launch a browser window and agree to the “Terms of Internet Service Use”? You will not be allowed access to the Internet until the terms have been accepted.
II. Check IP Address. If you have accepted the terms and are still unable to access, you may want to check to see if your laptop or device has been assigned an IP address and a default gateway. The method to do so may vary, but the principle is the same. For example, on a windows laptop using XP, click on Start > Run and then type in “cmd” in the dialog box and click “OK”. This will open a Command prompt. At the prompt, type in “igconfig” and hit “Enter”. This will return the Windows IP Configuration for the device’s network cards (see image below).

You should look for the configuration of the “Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection”. The connection should have an IP address beginning with 192.168.X.XX with the last two sets of digits being assigned by the wireless access point. There should also be an address assigned as a “Default Gateway” of 192.168.X.X again assigned by the access point.
If your network card shows “Media Disconnected” then your wireless card is either turned off or disabled. Enable your wireless card and try again.
III. Check IP Configuration. There may be a conflict with a preset IP (Internet) address. Your computer should be set to obtain an IP address automatically.
Automatic IP Configuration for Windows 2000 & Windows XP:
- Click the “Start” button browse to “Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connection”
- Click the “Properties” button
- Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” from the scrolling dialog
- Click the “Properties” button
- Select “Obtain an IP address automatically”
- Click “OK”
- Click “OK” again
- Reboot the computer.
IP Address Renewal Configuration for Windows™ 2000 & Windows™ XP
- Click the "Start" button and select "Run." Type "command" or "cmd" in the field and click "OK."
- At the DOS prompt type "ipconfig /all" and press "Enter."
- At the DOS prompt type "ipconfig /release" and press "Enter."
- At the DOS prompt type "ipconfig /renew" and press "Enter."
IV. Check Proxy Settings. Your web browser settings may be incorrect. You may be trying to connect through a Proxy Server. This is common in situations where the computer may be used in a corporate setting. The proxy server settings must be disabled to access the UTA WiFi Internet. Write down any existing settings before making changes.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer:
- In Control Panel, double-click "Internet Options."
- Click on the "Connections" tab, then the "LAN Settings" button.
- Remove the checkmark from the box labeled "Use a proxy server" and click "OK.
Internet Access Is Intermittent
Occasionally while surfing the Internet, you may get a screen similar to the one below.

Providing wireless Internet to a bus moving at high speed is more challenging than delivering it in an office building or private residence. Signal strengths may experience fluctuations and there may be locations where service is intermittent or unavailable. Please be patient and try again a few minutes later.
