Overview
The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is currently in the environmental phase of building a second FrontRunner commuter rail line between Salt Lake and Provo. The first line, which is currently under construction, will run from Salt Lake to Pleasant View in northern Weber County and will be operational in the spring of 2008.
Construction on the Provo to Salt Lake line may begin as early as next year and could be operational as soon as 2012 or 2013. Additional phases will eventually extend the line from Payson to Brigham City.
With the steady increase of population along the Wasatch Front and the need for transportation solutions, UTA is doing its best to relieve congestion and give the public a variety of choices when it comes to transportation; bus, light rail and commuter rail.

Legal Notice – Decision Document for Provo to Salt Lake City FrontRunner Project
The Utah Transit Authority has completed the Decision Document for the Provo to Salt Lake City FrontRunner Project. The Project, which will provide commuter rail service between Provo and downtown Salt Lake City and connect with the Weber County to Salt Lake City Commuter Rail Project at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub, was developed in coordination with the Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG), the Utah County Council of Governments (COG), and the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC).
A Proposed Action for this Project was identified in the Provo to Salt Lake City FrontRunner Project Draft Environmental Study Report (Draft ESR) that was issued for public review on August 10, 2007. Following issuance of the Draft ESR and completion of the public comment period, the Utah County COG adopted the Proposed Action by resolution as the Locally Preferred Alternative on October 4, 2007. Likewise, on October 25, 2007, WFRC adopted the Proposed Action as the Locally Preferred Alternative. UTA also adopted the Proposed Action as the Locally Preferred Alternative on October 24, 2007, pending adoption by WFRC the following day. UTA then moved forward with preliminary engineering and environmental study of the Proposed Action, and released the Final ESR on October 31, 2007, which began a 30-day public review period that concluded on November 30, 2007.
The Decision Document for the Project, which identifies the selected action, the potential environmental impacts, and the planned mitigation measures, was signed by the UTA General Manager on January 23, 2008. The environmental study process for the Provo to Salt Lake City FrontRunner Project is now complete.
The Decision Document is available for review at UTA’s Meadowbrook office (3600 South 700 West, Salt Lake City), at UTA’s FrontLine Headquarters (669 West 200 South, Salt Lake City) and on UTA’s website [click here].
