Overview

Utah needs a balanced transportation solution with improved highways and mass transit to meet its growing population’s needs. A regional commuter rail system is an integral part of that solution. UTA and many partner organizations participated in the environmental studies for the commuter rail system. UTA opened the first phase of the commuter rail system – called FrontRunner because it speedily runs along the Wasatch Front – in Salt Lake, Weber and Davis counties in April 2008.

The second phase of UTA’s commuter rail system – FrontRunner South – will extend the existing FrontRunner line south to Provo. The FrontRunner South line will be located in a 45-mile stretch of existing Union Pacific Railroad corridor and will feature six stations with the possibility of adding two future stations. When complete, FrontRunner South will allow passengers to travel from Provo to Salt Lake in just under one hour.

UTA broke ground on the FrontRunner South project in August 2008. The project features more than 50 structures and 30 bridges. As of June 2010, project construction is 50 percent complete. For more information about FrontRunner South construction, please visit the construction updates page.

UTA and its FrontRunner South contractor, Commuter Rail Constructors (CRC), is committed to providing the public with up-to-date information regarding construction activities and pertinent design information during the course of the project.
