FrontRunner South Construction Update*

Construction is progressing on UTA’s FrontRunner South commuter rail line. This line will be constructed on the east side of the Union Pacific Railroad track from Salt Lake City to 9800 South in Sandy and on the west side of the track all the way to Provo. The track is between 25 and 40 feet away from the Union Pacific Railroad track. The project has been split into “construction areas” numbered 10 through 16 for planning and information purposes.

Area 16 - Downtown Salt Lake City to 4500 South (Murray)

Construction Activity:
Between Mill Creek and 3300 South, utility crews will continue working on a sewer line casing in Union Pacific’s Roper Yard and they will also be installing permanent fencing in the vicinity. Between 3300 South and Central Avenue, crews will continue installing drainage for a cut wall that will be constructed in the area, and between Central Avenue and 4500 South, crews will continue to embank the track way and will also place wick drains near Central Avenue. At the 4500 South bridge, crews will construct forms and pour concrete for an abutment and a wing wall.

Traffic Impacts:
Central Avenue is currently closed at the tracks.

Salt Lake Central Station:
Station complete.

Area 16
Area 16
Area 16 - Crews restore the slope at the 3300 South bridge. Area 16 - Track way embankment work north of Central Avenue.

 

Area 15 - 4500 South (Murray) to Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale)

Construction Activity:
Crews will be installing hand rails and shear keys at the 5300 South bridge and demoing track and installing concrete pipe and boxes between 5300 South and 5900 South. Between 5900 South and I-215, crews will be installing temporary fencing and continuing construction on a retaining wall. At the 7200 South bridge, crews will be working on deck plates and grouting and patching.

Traffic Impacts:
The 4500 South Frontage Road is currently closed at the tracks for bridge work through the beginning of September.

The eastbound right lane will be closed on 5300 South Monday through Thursday.

There will be truck traffic with flaggers on 5900 South Monday and Tuesday.

The eastbound left lane will be closed on 7200 South Monday and Tuesday nights between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Murray Station:
Crews will continue to construct forms for the Murray Station canopy light pole foundations.

Area 14 - Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale) to 14600 South (Bluffdale)

General Information:
Considerable progress has been made on the flyover structure west of Salt Lake Community College’s Miller Campus at 9800 South. The 642-foot flyover bridge features a 40-foot-high bridge deck that will allow FrontRunner to travel from the east to the west side of Union Pacific Railroad’s track way. The flyover structure’s approaches consist of keystone block MSE walls filled entirely with lightweight fill to minimize settlement.

Construction Activity:
Crews will continue excavating for a retaining wall north of 9000 South and at the 9000 South bridge and will also install lagging, or boards, between the H-pile that has been driven at the 9000 South bridge. At the 9120 South bridge, crews will finish stabilization for the south abutment and will also build forms and pour concrete for a leveling pad for a wall that will tie in to the bridge. South of 9120 South, crews will resume construction on a retaining wall, and at 10000 South crews will set a transformer vault and proof power conduits.

Utility work will take place between 10000 South and 10600 South, and at the 10600 South bridge, crews will continue work on the bridge piers and also excavate and install lagging. Between South Jordan Gateway and 11400 South, crews will be clearing and grubbing the corridor for Union Pacific’s new track. At the Bangerter Highway bridge, crews will be constructing forms for one of the abutment’s ballast walls, setting the bridge girders and also completing restoration work at the bridge construction site. South of Bangerter Highway, crews will continue to embank the track way.

Traffic Impacts:
On 9000 South, the westbound shoulder will be closed Monday through Friday; flaggers will be assisting trucks entering and exiting the railroad corridor.

There will be truck traffic with flaggers on 9400 South Monday through Thursday.

The eastbound left lane on 10600 South will be closed Monday and Tuesday.

There will be truck traffic with flaggers on South Jordan Gateway at approximately 11000 South Monday and Wednesday.

There will be the following impacts on Bangerter Highway this week:

  • Eastbound right lane closure, Monday through Thursday
  • Westbound double right lane closure, Tuesday night from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
  • Westbound double right lane closure, Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Various lane closures in both directions on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. followed by a full road closure from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on both nights. Traffic will be detoured north on Redwood Road, 12300 South and Pony Express Road or south on Redwood Road, 14600 South and Pony Express Road.

South Jordan Station:
Lightweight fill for the job is being stored at the station site. There are no construction activities to report.

Draper Future Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Area 13 - 14600 South (Bluffdale) to Thanksgiving Point (Lehi)

Construction Activity:
Crews will be creating construction access south of 14600 South and continuing slope excavation below the Thanksgiving Point golf course. Work on a bridge

Traffic Impacts:
There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area.

Area 12 - Thanksgiving Point (Lehi) to Main Street (American Fork)

General Information:
Crews are currently constructing two major bridges in Lehi at 2300 West and 2100 North. The 2300 West bridge will allow FrontRunner to travel over Lehi City’s future 2300 West road project and the 2100 North bridge will span UDOT’s future Mountain View Corridor, 2100 North roadway. The 2100 North bridge will feature abutments on each end of the bridge and five center piers. For the purposes of this publication, the piers are numbered 1 through 5 starting at the southern end of the bridge.

Construction Activity:
At the 2300 West bridge, crews will strip the forms built for the back walls, set girders for the bridge, and construct hand rails, shear keys and the deck plate. Work will also resume on the retaining walls that will tie in to the 2300 West bridge. At the 2100 North bridge, work continues on parapet and ballast walls and crews will also be stripping the deck this week.

At 1500 North crews will be installing a signal house and at 1220 North crews will be installing an irrigation ditch. At 500 West, Main Street and 200 South in Lehi, crews will be supporting work for Union Pacific duct and fiber installation. Between Main Street and 200 South, crews will be clearing and grubbing the corridor and beginning embankment work for the track way, and crews will be permanently closing the 300 South crossing. Between 300 South and Center Street, crews will install permanent fencing, and at Center Street crews will be placing cap stones for a retaining wall constructed along the street. Finish work activities for the crossing improvements will continue at the Center Street crossing this week, and at the 300 East permanent crossing closure crews will install permanent fencing. At Mill Pond Road, crews will be plowing duct bank.

Traffic Impacts:
There will be truck traffic with flaggers at the 2150 North/2300 West intersection in Cranberry Farms on Tuesday for bridge girder deliveries.

There will be truck traffic with flaggers on 200 South Monday through Friday

The 300 South crossing will be permanently closed this week.

There will be lane impacts at the Center Street crossing at various times this week while crews complete crossing upgrade work.

Lehi Station:
A portion of the Lehi Station Park and Ride Lot is now open for public use.

On the Garden Drive side of the pedestrian tunnel, crews will form and pour concrete for the step walls and build scaffolding, and on the Park and Ride side of the tunnel, crews will be backfilling at the structure.

At the Park and Ride Lot, crews will continue to install conduit, curb and gutter and rock at a detention pond.

Area 12
Area 12 - A canopy is being constructed to cover the stairs at the pedestrian tunnel in Lehi.

 

 Area 11 - Main Street (American Fork) to University Parkway (Orem)

Construction Activity:
Crews will be blowing fiber into UTA’s ducts between American Fork and Provo. Between 7350 West and 200 South, crews will clean up slopes and ditches, finish prepping the sub grade and place sub ballast. On 200 South near the American Fork Park and Ride Lot, crews will be paving. Crews will be working at several crossings in American Fork and Orem this week to finish crossing upgrades (see list of affected crossings in the traffic impacts section below). Between the American Fork River and 1500 South in American Fork, crews will surface, line and dress the track, and between 5200 North in Vineyard and Geneva Road in Orem, crews will de-stress the track.

Traffic Impacts:
There will be paving work on 200 South near the American Fork Park and Ride Lot this week. To support this work, the westbound lane will be closed during the day with flaggers directing traffic and both lanes of traffic will be shifted at night.

The 200 South crossing in American Fork will be closed for crossing upgrade work Monday, August 23 through Sunday, August 29. Traffic will be detoured on Storrs Avenue, 300 South and 500 West.

There will be lane impacts at various times this week at the following crossings while crews complete crossing upgrade work:

  • 200 South, American Fork
  • 100 East, American Fork
  • 1100 South, American Fork
  • 1500 South, American Fork
  • 800 South, Orem

American Fork Station:
A portion of the American Fork Station Park and Ride Lot is now open for public use.

There are no construction activities to report.

Vineyard Future Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Orem Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Area 10 - University Parkway (Orem) to Center Street (Provo)

General Information:
Significant progress has been made in Area 10 along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor between University Parkway in Orem and Freedom Boulevard in Provo. Crews have prepared a path for FrontRunner by grading and clearing the right-of-way and relocating water lines. Drainage and irrigation installations are generally complete in this area, and main line earthwork has been finalized from University Parkway to 2000 South in Orem and from the Provo River bridge to 500 West in Provo. At-grade crossing improvements have also been completed in Provo at 2000 North, 2800 West, 1680 North, 820 North, Draper Lane, 900 West, 700 West, 500 West and Freedom Boulevard.

Construction Activity:
Crews will be blowing fiber into UTA’s ducts between American Fork and Provo. Just south of University Parkway in Orem, crews will be cleaning up the grade, slopes and edge drain, placing bottom ballast and staging and placing ties. Between the Provo River bridge and Center Street, crews will install permanent fencing, and at the 900 West 500 South crossing crews will finish crossing upgrades. Between 700 West and Freedom Boulevard, crews will be removing poles, and between Freedom Boulevard and University Avenue, crews will continue to construct track. From Freedom Boulevard to 900 South, crews will install permanent fencing, remove poles and construct track.

Traffic Impacts:
There will be lane impacts at the 900 West 500 South crossing at various times this week while crews complete crossing upgrade work.

Provo Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Area 10
Area 10 - Crews place an asphalt base for a turnout in Provo near the end of the line.

 

Hobble Creek Wetlands Project — Springville, Utah

Description:
Although FrontRunner’s terminus is located in Provo, crews have finished construction on a floodplain south of Provo in Springville, Utah, to offset wetlands impacts related to building commuter rail in Utah County. In cooperation with the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program and other agencies, this project was constructed adjacent to a new Hobble Creek channel, a tributary to Utah Lake, and will replace major wetlands functions and vegetation and provide a protected nursery habitat for newly hatched June sucker fish. General Construction Information

Access during Construction
UTA is committed to maintaining access to all of the businesses and residences along the construction corridor.

Construction Hours
Construction on the project is permitted to take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday each week. Additionally, specific activities may require different working hours depending upon the conditions and will be coordinated with city officials.
