UTA’s FAREPAY discount has been extended. Riders who use FAREPAY will continue to receive 40 percent off bus fare, 20 percent off TRAX and S-Line fare, and up to 20 percent off FrontRunner fare through 2018.

UTA plans to continue the FAREPAY discount until a comprehensive study of its fare system is completed. The agency has been exploring ways to simplify fares, keep fares affordable and ensure that fares are aligned with operating expenses. As the study progresses, the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback on fare proposals, and any potential changes will be reviewed and approved by the UTA Board of Trustees. UTA does not anticipate making changes to its fare system until early 2019 at the soonest.

“FAREPAY has proven to be a valuable tool for both occasional and daily transit riders,” UTA President/CEO Jerry Benson said. “We’re pleased to extend the FAREPAY discount while we examine our fare system to see how it can be improved and modernized.”

FAREPAY allows riders to load any amount of money between $5 and $500 to their reusable card and pay as they go, tapping on and off the system at electronic card readers. The program was launched in late 2013. Since then, UTA riders have used FAREPAY for more than 9 million boardings.

FAREPAY is available online, at UTA Customer Service locations and at hundreds of retailers throughout UTA’s service area, including select 7-11, Maverick, Walgreens and Associated Foods stores. There is a one-time $3 fee to purchase a FAREPAY card. The cards can be registered online to protect against loss and theft and to transfer funds to a new card. Creating an online account also allows riders to check their balance, easily add more money to a card or sign up for automatic reloads from a debit, credit or bank account.
