Project Overview

May 4 – June 2

UTA is replacing rails and switches in two areas between the City Center and Courthouse stations on Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City. Replacing the rail and switches in these areas is one of UTA’s most significant repair projects since TRAX opened in December 1999.

The tracks and switches have been in service for almost 20 years and have experienced considerable wear in these high traffic sections. UTA is completing this work to keep the system in good operating condition, ensuring the safety and reliability of TRAX for years to come.

To minimize the inconvenience to our riders, motorists, and affected residents and businesses, the condensed 24/7 construction schedule will allow crews to complete the project in just four weeks, as opposed to months of ongoing, intermittent disruption.

UTA is implementing multiple efforts - with support from project partners including the Utah Department of Transportation, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Chamber and Downtown Alliance - to provide information to UTA riders and motorists, as well as residents and business located in the construction area. All businesses in the affected area will be open during construction.

Detailed information and maps about the construction phases and corresponding impacts to riders and motorists is available at www.rideuta.com/construction. Regular updates during construction will be available on the website as well as UTA’s Twitter feed, @rideuta.

Project Details

Half Grand Union (400 South & Main Street Intersection):

  • What are we replacing? Half Grande Union on Main Street and 400 South
  • What is a Half Grand Union (HGU)? A half grand union is a rail track junction where track railway lines cross at grade, often in a street intersection or crossroads. They have curved junction tracks on two adjoining corners of the intersection, with a total of eight railroad switches to allow trains coming from any direction to take any of the two other directions.
  • What is a HGU used for? It is used to route trains through downtown, as well as to and from the University of Utah, the Downtown Business District, the Airport or connections to FrontRunner.
  • How old is our HGU? The HGU was added to the existing North/South TRAX line in 2001 as part of the University TRAX line.
  • Why are we replacing it? The HGU is now 18 years old and in need of replacement. Some repairs have been made over time. The upgrade will provide for more automation and reliable switching of train movements.

Turnouts (150 South & Main Street):

  • What are we replacing? 4 Turnouts on Main Street and 150 South
  • What is a Turnout? A single crossover consists of two turnouts positioned in two tracks that allow the vehicle to go from one track to another. The two tracks are usually, but not always, parallel, and the turnouts are usually identical. A pair of single crossovers—one right hand and one left hand—that are arranged sequentially along the tracks is called a universal crossover. http://www.railsystem.net/turnouts/
  • What is a Turnout used for? It is used transfer trains from one set of tracks to another set of tracks
  • How old is our Turnout? Some of the switches we are replacing have been in service for over 18 years and are wearing out.
  • Why are replacing it? We are replacing the track and switches to ensure the TRAX system remains in a State of Good Repair, and provide safe and reliable service for many more years to come.

Cyclists

The easiest way for cyclists to deal with UTA’s construction is to hop off your bike and walk around. No sidewalks will be closed during the project. Depending on the phase, you will be back on your bike in a block or two. Please do not ride your bike on the main street sidewalks, because there will be increased pedestrian traffic. There will be no northbound road access on Main Street between 400 & 500 South to ride your bike. If you want to stay in the saddle, use State Street, West Temple or 200 West.
